Lisbon is located on Route 169, along the old stagecoach route linking Norwich, Connecticut and Worcester, Massachusetts. In 1786, the town was incorporated under its present name on lands from Norwich.
The center of Lisbon is an area called Newent, after the old Newent Ecclesiastical Society. Going north, the 32-mile scenic highway begins as Exit 83A goes off Route 395 into the center of town.
Because of its hilly and rocky terrain, Lisbon was the first town in the county to have a railroad tunnel built back in 1837, 300 feet long through solid rock, and is still in use to this day.
